Anglers constantly call the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to find a bait shop.
The new tool is a comprehensive map that shows the locations of licensed bait retailers. These retailers sell minnows, wigglers and crayfish.
“We would advise the public to always call any listed retail outlet found in the application before making a trip to purchase bait,” said DNR fisheries biologist Tom Goniea. “Some locations are seasonal or have varied hours and may not carry an angler’s preferred bait.”
The DNR says the Retail Bait Shop Locator will stay up to date because it regulates the bait industry and issues minnow dealer licenses.
The Retail Bait Shop Locator can be found on the DNR’s new Commercial Bait Industry page. Besides the locator, the website provides information on the bait industry. This information includes harvest regulations, where bait harvest occurs, how live bait gets from the wild to local bait shops, the economic impact of bait collection and sales and more.
The DNR will update the site with new information and retail locations for bait purchase as necessary.
The DNR says that the locator is not a downloadable app, but is compatible with all types of electronic devices.
