Former Miami Dolphins fullback Rob Konrad is lucky to be alive after falling off his fishing boat.
Ex-Dolphins fullback, Rob Konrad, was fishing off the shores of southern Florida when he fell of the boat while trying to reel in a fish.
Rob Konrad was forced to swim to shore when he could not re-board his 36-foot fishing boat due to the auto-pilot navigation system on the vessel.
Authorities were notified of his absence when Rob Konrad didn’t show up for dinner at his friends’ house. The U.S. Coast Guard sent out a helicopter search but could not find the ex-football player.
Rob Konrad, standing 6 foot 3 inches and weighing 255 pounds, was forced to swim nine miles to the shore in Palm Beach. Coast Guard public affairs specialist Mark Barney told reporters, “He was lucky he was able to swim nine miles throughout the night in the dark in the frigid waters. He was pretty exhausted.”
Rob Konrad swam through what the Florida Museum of Natural History has calculated to be the world’s most shark-infested waters, in what must have been about a ten-hour swim.
