Only Australia could have a species of fish called the blue bastard and this is what it looks like.

A hard-to-find and yet aggressive fish, the newly named Plectorhinchus caeruleonothus  has managed to keep the name that fishermen gave it long ago: the blue bastard.

Finally documented by scientists, this member of the sweetlips fish family was known for many years only through the tall tales of seafaring anglers.

Jeff Johnson of the Queensland Museum in Brisbane said of the name; “It’s an affectionate turn of the phrase.”

Johnson had heard of the fish, but before seeing two good photographs of the creature, he wasn’t all that sure if it really existed.

The fish start out life as a striped then completely lose those to become the powder-blue creature seen now in photos.
