Finally, Dude Wipes have given us a sanitary moist tissue for the outdoorsman.
“Ew, fish guts!”
Okay, so maybe a self-respecting angler wouldn’t make that exclamation publicly, but when it comes down to it, fish and other wild game drive us to some pretty dirty places to do some pretty dirty things.
Enter Dude Wipes, a smart new way to stay clean in the outdoors, where a sink and soap are nowhere to be found. Made by Chicago-based Dude Products, the wipes are individually packaged and easy to take on-the-go, perfect for hunters, anglers, hikers or anyone spending time away from the comforts of home.
Dude Wipes are flushable, biodegradable and contain Vitamin E and aloe.
Ryan Meegan, dubbed the company’s “National Sales Dude,” spoke with wideopenspaces.com about the product and its relevance to the outdoor world.
“We see the product as a great fit for the outdoors, and we’re trying to tap into that market,” Meegan said.
The idea stemmed from the use of baby wipes as toilet paper accompaniment, and as Ryan and his colleagues soon found, was the beginning of something big.
“We would go through an entire case so quickly,” Meegan said, “and we kind of all had an ‘A-ha!’ moment.”
Some market research (in, literally, the supermarket) and an entrepreneurial spirit led Meegan and his roommates to develop Dude Products, specifically catering to dudes who want to stay clean and are perhaps reluctant to carry around a bulk-sized package of baby wipes.
Dude Wipes hit the scene in early 2012, and established the company as pioneers in the male-centric moist toilet tissue industry.
A lean marketing operation was aided by online buzz and Internet sharing, developing into a “Where Will Dude Wipes Take You?” Web photo gallery and a wide-ranging viral sensation.
Fast forward to 2013, and Dude Products have staked their claim, winning the 2013 Visionary Award at the Vision 2013 Consumer Products Conference (where past winners include Swiffer and they beat out a Kimberly-Clark product).
MTV highlighted Dude Wipes as a top product at the 2013 Lollapalooza Music Festival in Chicago, and the product will be featured in an upcoming issue of Maxim Magazine.
Meegan views the outdoors realm as a significant market demographic for Dude Wipes, and assures hunters and anglers that it will only take one experience to be hooked.
“We really see a big opportunity because of the fact that our product is individually packaged,” he said, “This is a very practical product for hunters and fishermen to take with them in their equipment, or easily fit them in their pocket or wallet. Obviously in fishing and hunting there are situations where your hands are going to get dirty, so we see the product as a great fit.”
Future plans even include camouflaged packaging.
Of course, we had to ask the question on every hunter’s mind: Can Dude Wipes be opened silently while sitting in a treestand?
“Yes, they have a natural tear section on the wipe, and can be opened very quietly, and the tissue itself is unscented,” Meegan said in response.
