Hikers vacationing in Maui, Hawaii were swept into a river when a flash flood suddenly surprised them. A drone, hovering high above, captured it all.
A group of six friends were hiking on a popular trail near Maui’s Road to Hana. An intense flash flood appeared without warning, taking the entire group by surprise.
Within mere minutes, the rushing water overtakes the hikers – pushing them to the waiting river below.
The owner of the drone, Rennee Lusano, was unsure if the drone was recording – or what it might be recording.
“I was only concerned that it was hovering high enough to be out of danger while I climbed to higher ground,” she said.
Luckily for the group, all emerged from the water unscathed and safe. A 911 call was made and the hikers were airlifted out of the area.
This video shows exactly how quick a flash flood can occur. Lusano hopes it can be used as a teaching tool.
“I hope that our story and video spreads awareness and prevents similar rescues from having to take place in the future.”
