Ben, a lab mix who lives on Tory Island off of Ireland, runs down to the harbor nearly every day, wagging his tail with anticipation. He paddles out to meet with his friend Duggie the dolphin. According to his owner, Pat Doonan, Ben can sense when his dolphin friend is nearby.
Once reunited, Duggie will swim around her canine buddy for a while, sometimes playfully blowing bubbles at Ben from below the surface. Ben will swim happily for hours with the dolphin and often has to be forced out of the water for his own safety.
Duggie first appeared near the harbor in 2006, around the time another dolphin washed up on shore. Locals theorize that the dead dolphin may have been Duggie’s mate, and after losing him on the island she chose to stay behind.
Doonan said Duggie will often temporarily join passing schools of dolphins but will always return to the harbor. Ben appears to be the only companion she will ever accept.
Here’s more from Dulamankelly.
Playtime can end when the dolphin pursues a ferry out to the sea or if Ben is called in. Then the tired dog will paddle back to shore, but Duggie has often been known to support her exhausted friend on his swim back. It’s the least she can do for the friend who’s helped her learn to love again.
