Dick’s Sportings Goods to Stop Selling AR-Style Rifles, But That’s Not All

Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, will stop selling “assault-style” weapons and more.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is making a blunt statement that thoughts and prayers aren’t cutting it.

The decision comes shortly after the nation’s most recent school shooting in Parkland, Florida. According to a statement Dick’s Sporting Goods made, the company made the decision in light of the protests and calls for action.

“We at DICK’S Sporting Goods are deeply disturbed and saddened by the tragic events in Parkland. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their loved ones.

But thoughts and prayers are not enough.

We have tremendous respect and admiration for the students organizing and making their voices heard regarding gun violence in schools and elsewhere in our country.

We have heard you. The nation has heard you.”

As the press release goes on, they claim they didn’t sell the shooter the gun he used in the shooting, but they did sell him a shotgun. This was disturbing to executives, because they know how easily it could’ve been the gun he used.

The Pennsylvania-based company made the following commitments in their statement:

  • We will no longer sell assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles. We had already removed them from all Dick’s stores after the Sandy Hook massacre, but we will now remove them from sale at all 35 Field & Stream stores.
  • We will no longer sell firearms to anyone under 21 years of age.
  • We will no longer sell high capacity magazines.
  • We never have and never will sell bump stocks that allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly.

The company said it’s also calling on elected officials to enact “common-sense gun reform,” such as an assault-style firearms ban, a minimum purchase age of 21 and a ban on high-capacity magazines and bump stocks. It also called for private sale and gun show loopholes to be closed and universal background checks to be enacted, as well as a universal database of those banned from buying guns.
