The blue whale is the largest animal in the world and to be near one can be breathtaking.
Blue whales can grow to be 100′ in length and weigh almost 200 tons. I think it is safe to say that when Rich German encountered a blue whale while on his stand up paddleboard (SUP) off the coast of Laguna Beach, CA, he felt up close and personal.
German stayed calm and captured some amazing footage of the blue whale on his GoPro camera.

While this seems to be an awesome and entirely organic video, some people are crying foul over it. The blue whale is an endangered species with only around 8,000 in existence.
It is against federal law to harrass an endangered species, and while I personally would not consider what German did in his video to be harassment, there is fear that videos like this will lead others with SUPs out to the water in search of blue whales to film.
