Colt had quite a dilemma on their hands. Their near-obsolete cap and ball revolvers were falling behind the times during transition to cartridge firing arms.

While a competitor’s patent kept them from making cartridge revolvers, they found the next best thing. The Colt Richards Conversion turned this 1860 Army Revolver into a cartridge firing revolver. This conversion was also offered on other Colt percussion revolvers.

This was a fill-in until the Peacemaker was introduced in 1873. Where there is a will, there is a way, and this conversion paid Colt’s bills quite well.
