Catching a Big Marlin by Kayak is Exciting, Dangerous Business

Marlin fishing is traditionally a big undertaking, with men strapped into chairs on sturdy motorized vessels. This guy does it in a kayak.

Extreme fisherman and host of The Ultimate Fishing Show, Matt Watson, is chasing the dynamic and unpredictable marlin. That’s all well and good. Lots of folks have pursued and conquered marlin before Watson.

What makes Watson’s attempt more than a little wacky is that he’s doing it from a one-man kayak. But that’s what the man does: he fishes in ways that are, shall we say, “untraditional”.

“This fish has got so much grunt!” he says through gritted teeth. “It’s taking me for a sleigh ride now!”

Marlin can, of course, be an extremely dangerous fish to handle at close quarters. Watson hopes to bring the big fish and its sword-tipped snout right next to himself in a Viking kayak not much larger than the beast itself. He wants to tag the fish and then safely release it.

Things get a little hairy for a few moments, but he manages to accomplish his goal while maintaining control of both the fish and the kayak. That’s what I call exciting fishing.
