In a tragic turn of events, a Calgary woman named Jennifer Karren was recently killed when a breaching whale crashed into the tour boat she was on.

The day wasn’t supposed to end this way for the woman who was identified by friends as 35-year-old Jennifer Karren. She was on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico when the tragedy occurred. Karren was onboard a snorkel tour boat operated by Cabo Adventures when a breaching whale crashed into the vessel. Karren was the only fatality.

Karren was injured during the crash and thrown into the water. Rescuers pulled her from the water and took her to shore, but her injuries were too severe. She later passed away in a clinic. Two other tourists also suffered serious injuries during the collision, but details on them have not yet been released.

There are regulations in Mexico for boats to keep a safe distance from whales in the coastal waters where the large mammals breed. However, those regulations do not exist in the waters near Cabo San Lucas. This tragic accident may have been avoided if the opposite was true.

“She had an open and pure heart and was just a kind individual,” a family friend of the woman’s told CTV News in Calgary.

Karren worked for a company called WorleyParsons in Calgary. They have since released a statement on the sad passing of their employee.

WorleyParsons wishes to express its condolences to the family and friends of Jen Karren. Jen died in a tragic accident while holidaying in Mexico.

Jen worked for WorleyParsons for six years and was a member of our Office Services team in Calgary, which includes mail services and facilities management. Her colleagues remember her as a positive, friendly teammate who was willing to help out whenever she could. She always spoke kindly of everyone with whom she came in contact. Jen will hold a special place in the hearts of many, including her teammates of the WorleyParsons Freedom Riders, with whom she participated in the Ride to Conquer Cancer for the last two years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Jen’s family and friends, and all those affected by this tragedy. We are providing support to all members of the WorleyParsons family who are deeply affected by Jen’s sudden death.

The breaching whale was a humpback, which are known for their impressive leaps out of the water. Unfortunately, the boat carrying Karren was too close to this whale as it broke the surface.

Our condolences go out to the family and friends of Jennifer Karren and anyone else who may have been affected by her untimely passing.
