Burglar Hides in Pond From Florida Police, Killed by 11-Foot Gator

My News 13

The Florida police didn’t expect this.

In a rather shocking story, a suspected burglar was being pursued by the Florida police until the trail went cold. K9s were brought in as the search grid expanded, but the thief escaped. It wasn’t until a few days later that the trail was picked back up.

Matthew Riggins, 22, was reported missing to the Florida police by his girlfriend. During the course of the report, she admitted that Riggins told her he was breaking into homes in the area and was being pursued by the police the night he went missing. 10 days later his body was found in a nearby pond.

“He probably went into the lake to hide from the officers and the dog, and came across that gator,” Maj. Tod Goodyear with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said.

“To hide somewhere to try and get away, and then meeting up with an animal like that, no, I’ve never had that happen before.”

Upon recovering the body from the pond, the police encountered a large gator. The alligator was euthanized and with an examination of its stomach contents suspicions were confirmed that Riggins was killed by the gator as he hid in the pond.

The investigation is still ongoing.
