A coywolf attack in the city of Missisauga, Ontario shows that even urban areas have to deal with wild animals.
There are nearly three quarters of a million people in the city of Mississauga just west of Toronto.
Being a part of the greater Toronto area, the most populated city in Canada, you would think that a coywolf problem wouldn’t exist, but it does.
“Coywolf” is known as an informal term for a cross between a coyote and a wolf. They can be experts at surviving in urban areas of the eastern U.S. and Canada. They generally move under the cover of darkness, hunting small rodents and rabbits.
In 2014 there were three known cases of coywolf attacks on dogs in this area. It’s not known whether other missing dog cases are related.
Mississauga Animal Services suggests that, in the case of a coywolf attack, you make yourself large and loud to hopefully ward off the attacking animal. At this time there is no plan to trap and remove any coywolves from the area barring a threat to humans.
