The baseball world received some heartbreaking news on Sunday when it was announced that Jose Fernandez, 24-year-old pitcher for the Marlins, died in a boating accident.

Lorenzo Veloz of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced on Sunday that Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was one of three men killed in an accident off Miami beach early Sunday morning.

Officials stated that the Coast Guard found a 32-foot boat upside-down on top of a Miami Beach jetty at 3:00 A.M. on Sunday. According to Veloz, though none of the deceased men were life vests, Fernandez died from trauma, not drowning. On Monday, the Miami-Dade medical examiner announced the names of the other two men who died in the boating accident with Fernandez: Emilio Macias and Eduardo Rivero.

Though officials suspect that speed was a factor in the accident, they did not find any evidence of alcohol or illegal drug use.

According to Veloz:

It does appear that speed was involved due to the impact and the severity of it. It does appear to be that they were coming at full speed when they encountered the jetty and the accident happened.

The Marlins canceled their Sunday game with the Atlanta Braves in order to give the players and staff of the team some time to deal with the unexpected and tragic news.

At a press conference on Sunday, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria said:

Sadly, the brightest lights are often the ones that extinguish the fastest. Jose left us far too soon, but his memory will endure in all of us. At this difficult time, our prayers are with his mother, grandmother, family and friends. The way he played this game, the way he was on the field, that’s a way how these guys can honor him.

Jose Fernandez had come to the United States from Cuba in 2008 before being drafted by the Marlins in 2011. He became a United States citizen last year.
