Bizarre Fish Found on South African Beach, What Is It?

Scientists are puzzling over a bizarre fish that was found recently on a South African beach.

Leandra Visser discovered the oddity on a beach while vacationing at De Kelder near Cape Town, South Africa, according to the Afrikaans daily Die Burger.

Visser posted the image to Facebook with the caption, “Can someone please tell me what the hell this is?”

Visser denied that the image was a fake, so Die Burger decided to investigate. Reporters from the newspaper sent the picture to biologists at the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB) in Grahamstown. Alan Whitfield, the chief scientist at SAIAB, told Die Burger that he’s not certain if the strange creature is even a fish at all, noting that the it lacks any fins.

Although, a biologist at the University of Cape Town thinks the freak creature is a dried out Klipsuier, also known as a Rocksucker. The creature does bear some semblance to the rocksucker, which has large teeth and grows about 30 cm in length.

Additional theories in the scientific community suggest it’s a mutated species, as the creature’s jaw and body appear to be disproportionate.

Whatever it is, it sure is ugly.
