Talk about a fish tale! Check out ‘Pig Nose,’ the legendary sturgeon that a teenaged fishing guide hooked and landed.
As far as fish tales go, they don’t get much better than this. Nick McCabe, a 19-year-old guide with River Monster Adventures, was out with a group of clients August 23 when the unimaginable happened: he hooked into the sturgeon nicknamed Pig Nose.
‘Pig Nose’ is the moniker given to a legendary sturgeon that inhabits the Fraser River. Thought to be close to 80 years old, the 10-foot 2-inch monster damaged his nose 40 years ago. To this day, no one know how the injury occurred, but this fish has been the talk of sporting goods stores for years.
The sturgeon was hooked just downstream of Lillooet, giving McCabe a battle that lasted a muscle-aching two hours. The fish is estimated to weigh 650 pounds and had a girth of five and a half feet.
Simply put, what a momentous catch. It’s hard to imagine the fight a fish of that size would put up!
Want a shot at tangling with Pig Nose? Why not a book a charter with McCabe at River Monster Adventures? Just make sure your muscles are ready to be tested before boarding that boat.
