We always knew orcas, a.k.a killer whales, were ruthless, but damn.
Anglers on board the F/V Sierra Dawn caught a glimpse of the brutality of nature last week near Ketchikan, AK when an orca used its tail to punt a sea lion roughly 20 feet into the air. The sea lion had been hiding underneath the boat, presumably from the killer whale lurking somewhere nearby. When the anglers decided to move on to a new spot, the whale moved in to strike.

Orca whales often hunt sea lions in pods, or group formations. The whales use highly-organized strategies to hunt down prey and single out their prey. A single sea lion doesn’t stand a chance against a pod of orcas, let alone one whale.
