A Baton Rouge resident recently caught a “monster” speckled trout near East Timbalier Island.
Rennie Carter caught the 7-pound, 11-ounce fish on March 5. The fish measured 29 inches long.
The self-proclaimed speckled trout fanatic says it’s the largest he has ever caught.
“I knew it was a speckled trout. It came up right away, and started shaking its head,” Carter said to NOLA.com. “Three weeks ago, I caught a 7-7 at (Calcasieu) Lake while wade-fishing, so I had just seen one a few weeks ago. When this one hit the net, I knew it was a 7-pounder.”
The average size of a speckled trout is 1-2 pounds. Five pounders are caught regularly. Carter’s catch almost reached the “rare” size of 8 pounds and over.
Carter has a camp in Pointe Fourchon and fishes the lower Lafourche and Jefferson Parishes. He says he had to fight a one-foot chop to reach East Timbalier, but the effort was worth it.
Carter says he maxed out with 25 of the fish on the trip, none less that two pounds.
What did the “monster” fish go for? A chicken-on-a-chain-colored Saltwater Assassin threaded on a 1/4-ounce jighead.
