Alternative Ballistics has invented a way for law enforcement officers to use their sidearms in a less lethal manner.
The Alternative, a new shooting product from Alternative Ballistics, is a device that turns a standard issue police sidearm into a less lethal weapon. The Alternative easily attaches to the front of an officer’s handgun and delivers a shot at less than 50 percent of the speed of a normally-shot bullet. The alloy ball that collects the bullet upon firing the Alternative-equipped weapon delivers an impact that will injure and stun a suspect instead of causing the penetrating damage of a bullet.
According to TechTimes, “The Alternative acts as a one-use bullet speed modifier and is small enough to be carried around at the belt of every police officer. It is easy to attach it to the barrel of the gun. The orange plastic support hooks up easily to the weapon. After installing it, the first bullet fired attaches itself to a ping pong-sized metal alloy ball that is propelled forward by the bullet’s force.”
Alternative Ballistics claims that their product does not affect accuracy in any way. The Alternative also does not interfere with any accessory rails found on an officer’s weapon. The mounting base is ejected from the gun automatically with the first shot, allowing for normal follow-up shots if necessary.
Considering the fact that The Alternative must be manually attached to a gun before it can be used, there will be questions about its usefulness in real-world situations. However, it seems to have a lot of potential to turn once deadly scenarios into situations that end better for everyone involved. If an officer has the time to attach The Alternative and evaluate the situation, there seems to be a lot of promise with the product.

As with any new product in the law enforcement sector, there are going to be dissenters, as well. There are those who say that an officer’s weapon training, which teaches them to fire more than one bullet at a target, would make The Alternative useless.
With other less than lethal gear already on the belts of police officers, The Alternative may have trouble catching on.
