A woman in Alaska hears screaming coming from outside her house and rushes out to see a grizzly bear taking down a moose calf.
Jennifer McLendon feared the screams were coming from one of her children. Instead, they were coming from the calf she had seen hanging around her house the last few days.
Warning: this video is not pleasant to watch.
As you can see in the video, the grizzly drags the moose as if dragging a tree limb. An animal which probably weighs around 400 lbs. Meanwhile, the mother of the calf stands yards away, helplessly watching the slaughter. Fish and Game arrive the next day and attempt to remove the carcass.
The grizzly, which turns out to be a sow with cubs, charges the men and they fire back. McLendon explains that the grizzly was not injured and the men are able to retrieve the carcass. The carcass is so devoured; it resembles a neatly trimmed cape returned by a professional tannery to the taxidermist. Obviously, the sow and cubs were hungry.
Grizzly bears are some of the strongest carnivores on the planet. Anything that can take down a moose of that size is nothing to be taken lightly. Not to mention the fact that this all took place in McLendon’s front yard. Thankfully no one was hurt. But I’d think twice before I let the kids go out and play for a while.
