An ATF agent thinks airsoft guns can be converted to machine guns, and seizes an entire shipment.
Sometimes, the information we get and then pass on gets so misconstrued, that eventually it’s completely wrong. That’s more or less what happened in this news report from a few years ago.
In this case, a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent felt that toy guns made out of plastic and cheap metal could be converted into actual machine guns.
We are not sure what instruction manual or other publication that this ATF agent thought he read, but as stated by the store owner that had his shipment of airsoft plastic pellet guns seized, it is not even in the realm of possibility. There are some cases floating around YouTube and the vast corners of the Web that show how airsoft guns can be converted into real guns, but a machine gun? Highly unlikely.
Hopefully by now, better training has been issued to agents to make the right calls when it comes to gun safety and control. We can only hope!
