The .30 carbine cartridge was quite a step toward a light military rifle. It was just shy of winning the government contract.

Winchester’s prototype ended up becoming the M1 Carbine. The Bendix-Hyde Second Model Prototype Carbine did well when it was in its first model, but the second submission went less than satisfactory. Winchester was awarded the contract.

Though the Bendix-Hyde Second Model Prototype Carbine lost the race to become the U.S. light rifle it was indeed a step toward the future of light arms development.
