8 Men Arrested on 77 Charges After Illegal Bear Hunting Investigation

What type of illegal bear hunting activities were going on to lead to the arrest of 8 men on 77 charges?

West Virginia Natural Resources Police have been working on an investigation into illegal bear hunting activities since last September when an illegal baiting site was discovered near Mount Storm in Grant County. The official investigation took place in Mineral, Grant and Pendleton Counties with a total of eight men being arrested.

The men arrested were said to be Mark Allen Lampka Jr. of Mount Storm; Daniel Boddy of New Creek; Chad Fridley of Mount Storm; Steve Thomas Lyons Jr. of Elk Garden; Dustin Knaggs of New Creek; Terry Kuh of Maysville; James Scott Kuhn of New Creek; and Ronnie P. Bothwell of Burlington.

“Mark Allen Lampka, Jr., of Mount Storm, has been charged with 2 counts of illegal trapping of bear, four counts of illegal killing of bear, six counts of illegal possession of bear, two counts of spotlighting bear. He has also been charged with conspiring to violate chapter 20 of the WV state code, among other game law violations.”

“Daniel Boddy, of New Creek, has been charged with two counts of illegal killing of bear, two counts of illegal trapping of bear, four counts of illegal possession of bear, spotlighting bear and conspiring to violate chapter 20 of WV state code.”

“Chad Fridley, of Mount Storm, has been charged with illegal killing of bear, spotlighting bear, two counts of illegal possession of bear and conspiring to violate chapter 20 of WV state code.”

“Steve Thomas Lyons, Jr., of Elk Garden, has been charged with illegal killing of bear, spotlighting bear, hunting bear with use of bait, illegal possession of bear and conspiring to violate WV state code.”

“Dustin Knaggs, of New Creek, has been charged with illegal killing of bear, spotlighting bear, illegal possession of bear and conspiring to violate chapter 20 of WV state code.”

“Terry Kuh, of Maysville, has been charged with spotlighting bear, hunting bear with the use of bait, illegal possession of bear, illegal taking of bear during closed season and conspiring to violate chapter 20 of WV state code.”

“James Scott Kuhn, of New Creek, has been charged with hunting bear with the use of a trap, illegal possession of bear and conspiring to violate chapter 20 of WV state code.”

“Ronnie P. Bothwell, of Burlington, has been charged with hunting bear with the use of a trap, illegal possession of bear and conspiring to violate chapter 20 of WV state code.”

With a case this large, it drives home the concept of conservation even further.
