Without a doubt, we have all done at least one of these things to harvest a game animal.
As hunters, we do some pretty crazy things to harvest a game animal. Sometimes it works, other times it may not. The traditional “sitting in a tree stand” method can be pretty successful, but so are other methods.
Some things we do may not always be applauded, and some may be frowned upon. If at the end of the hunt you are successful, uninjured and remained legal, it should go without saying, but… “That’s Hunting!”
Below is a list put together of some of the crazy things we’ve all done to harvest a game animal.
1. Calling in sick to work.
This may not fit the crazy description, but it surely is true. Many of us have spent a great deal of mornings or late evenings pretending to have a cold or the stomach bug. The worst part is when you shoot a buck of a lifetime the same day you are supposed to be home sick in bed.
2. Battling extremely frigid temperatures.
Being from the Adirondack region it was quite normal to hunt with below zero temperatures but that still doesn’t make it sane. Some will never understand our obsession but when it comes together and we succeed, it is always worth it.
3. Getting a little too close.
We love when our heart is pumping and the adrenaline is flowing, but sometimes it can be deadly. Sadly, some of us like it that way and sometimes we just get a little too close for comfort.
4. Trying to be as quiet as possible.
If you haven’t done this yet, you may never had to sneak up on a deer to get the job done. This was a screen shot of a video of me self-filming using three different cameras on a buck bedded with a doe in the middle of a winter wheat field this year. The boots were just a little too loud as I got within 100 yards so I had to do what was needed to get the job done.
5. Battling the storms.
We have all done this before, battled the rain, snow or wind. You name it, mother nature is in charge of us no matter what. Getting ahead of a cold front or trying to get in a hunt just before the storm hits, can be the best or worst decision we have ever made. The picture above is myself and my buddy Joe in Missouri trying to get a hunt in before a giant storm came in. Needless to say we got caught in the middle of it and although it wasn’t successful, it sure made some great footage.
6. Lying to the wife.
This is one I have never done, so I wouldn’t have a picture of what that looks like. Right dear? This may be one of the craziest things you have done but it may have produced too. I mean, that quick trip to the office to take care of a few things isn’t really a lie if your office is in the woods right?
7. Flat out doing whatever it takes to get the job done.
Here is Remi Warren from Apex Predator and although he may have gotten quite extreme, we’ve all done some sort of measure like this. I can remember trying to cross a frozen creek that was three feet deep. Needless to say the ice broke through and after getting wet, there was no point at turning back. The hunt ended successful as we landed ourselves in a honey hole of rabbits.
8. “I challenge you to a duel.”
Getting too close for comfort to dangerous animals is one thing, but trying to challenge them is another level. The boys from Whitetail Adrenaline know what it’s all about. These guys use their DIY decoy to get the job done and get in close challenging several bucks in their DVD series to get close enough to bow range. Often successful but to some this may be a crazy tactic to get the job done.
No matter the situation, we can all look back on a few things we have done and said, not sure if that was smart but it worked. And if it doesn’t work, it’s always worth the effort. As hunting legend, Jim Shockey says, “If it was easy, what would be the point?”
