I think we all can agree that sometimes we do some pretty crazy stuff in order to harvest a game animal.
As hunters, people often think we are crazy. That is in large part, because well, we are crazy. Here are seven crazy things we’ve all done to harvest a game animal.
1. Hunt in bizarre conditions
How many times have you hunted in extreme wind, rain, snow, you name it, to harvest a game animal? Some of the weather conditions we put ourselves through are downright miserable, but can be worth it in the end.
2. Wake up at ridiculous times
Need to get your decoy spread out by 5:00 a.m., or be in your treestand an hour before dark? No problem, we’ll do it.
3. Drive long distances for a short hunt
Your hunting property is three hours away, but you’ve got a spare night to get out and hunt. Why not make the long drive, even if you’ll only be in the stand for an hour and half? It may seem crazy to some, but not us.
4. Travel far and wide to hunt an animal you could hunt in your backyard
After going over number three, it got me thinking even more. How crazy is it that we might drive halfway across the country to deer hunt, when we could probably deer hunt in the backyard, or close to it? The same goes for other species. Don’t like the moose population in your state? Why not fly to Alaska or Canada? Some people will never understand, but to us, that’s the norm.
5. Track an animal forever
Ever make a marginal shot on an animal that leads to you track it, seemingly, for miles? To others it may seem crazy; to us, it’s simply ethical.
6. Use off-the-wall tactics
There are things we do at times that are crazy, even by other hunters’ standards. Whether that be stalking a deer behind a silhouette decoy and having him almost charge you, or who knows what else… off-the-wall tactics can deliver.
7. Get lost, and not care
Ever get lost in the woods while hunting and not really care, as long as you end up successful? To some, that seems absurd, but hunters will go to all ends to get that harvest.
To many people, a lot of the things we do as hunters to have a successful hunt seem crazy. But to us, it’s just another day living in paradise, and a successful hunt is icing on the cake.
