These five pieces of duck hunting gear are almost as important as your gun and where you hunt.
As you prepare for your next duck hunting season, make sure you have the best quality duck hunting gear. It is going to be cold, and you need to stay comfortable while also ensuring that you do all you can to have the best chance at success. These five things are something every duck hunter needs. We left out the shotgun, because, well, that’s a given.
1. Warm Waders
All waders are not created equal. This is one piece of duck hunting gear that is crucial to both your comfort and success as well as your safety. Get what you can afford, but a good wader with a 5mm neoprene will make sure you stay dry and warm. The Cabela’s Men’s SuperMag™ 1600-Gram chest waders are awesome. The bootfeet have a 1,600-gram Thinsulate Ultra Insulation, so they will keep your feet warm all day long. Cold feet are no fun.
2. Decoy Bag
You’ll need a good decoy bag to carry all of those decoys to the water. There are many options out there: finding one with a drain at the bottom that’s also built to last will ensure that your decoys will stay dry and the bag will last many seasons. The Splash Ultimate Floating Decoy Bag does it all and has a nice gun sleeve. Decoy bags are an essential piece of your duck hunting gear.
3. Duck Call
Obviously, you are going to need some sort of call. There are some great ones on the market and plenty that are nothing more than cheap plastic noise-makers. A call like “The Joker” from Pacific Calls is built for the absolute best sound and, unlike some other calls, has no “ring.” It packs an excellent punch and the perfect amount of hold so you can call ’em in from anywhere.
Again, like a good shotgun and call, decoys are a must when it comes duck hunting gear. Like all of the other gear, you can go cheap or you can do it right. The Hard Core Puddle comes with 18 decoys of a variety of different species. You don’t want to play favorites, and this will look much more appealing to any duck nearby. These decoys come ready to go right out of the package, and the paint will last for many seasons.
5. Flutter Wing
Standard decoys are excellent for attracting birds. Taking it one step further is a good Flutter-Wing decoy. Action attracts and these deliver. All of the movement is done with a string, and it perfectly imitates a landing bird. Most importantly, they are quiet.
