Not ready for deer season? You’re not alone. Here are three reasons we’re not ready for deer season to be here.
Deer season seems to creep up on people every year. By October 1st, archery season will be open around the country, and I’m betting there are people out there who aren’t ready. Here are a few reasons why you and I might not be ready for deer season to be here.
1. You Haven’t Checked Trail Cameras
We get trail cameras up in the early summer, and can’t wait to check cards. But then, you get so roped up in family life, work, you name it, and trail cameras haven’t been checked yet. If this is you, there are two ways to go about the days leading up to season. Either make a mad scramble, and get those cards checked, or wait until you hunt an area to check a camera. At this point, it might just be a better idea to wait until hunting.
2. Those Shooting Lanes Were Never Trimmed
I talk about shooting lanes often, because of the time that I wasn’t ready for deer season because of this very topic. I hunted a stand opening day where I never got around to re-trimming my shooting lanes. Of course that night I had a seven/eight year old legend of a buck that everybody knew about, but couldn’t get an arrow in come and stop broadside at seventeen yards from me. I was at full draw, and could never get a shot off because of the overgrown limbs in the way. I never did get a shot at that deer, and never saw him again.
Case in point, if you haven’t gotten those lanes trimmed, you’re probably not quite ready for deer season to be here.
3. Stands Aren’t Up
This is one of the top reasons we aren’t ready for deer season to be here. It happens to me all the time. Shoot, this season which opened in early September for me, I did a hang a hunt three out of my first five sits because I didn’t have stands up yet.
You probably know of all the awesome spots you need or want a stand up. When we get beyond busy in the summer months, actually putting these up goes on the back burner and you end up like me, hanging your stands when you actually go into hunt.
There are a lot of other reasons we might not be ready for deer season, but these three seem to happen every year. Get ready: if deer season isn’t open in your state, it will be before you know it.
