A native of Madagascar, the tenrec is barely five inches long but protects itself with sharp barbed spines similar to porcupine quills.
This sad, gelatinous-looking fish lives in the deep waters near Australia and New Zealand.

This refugee from a sci-fi picture digs through the U.S. and Canada, feeling its way along with a flanged face that is said to be able to detect seismic vibrations in the earth.
5. Cantor’s Giant Soft-shelled Turtle
Cantor’s turtle is a freshwater species that lives throughout Asia, can grow as much as six feet long, and looks like it melts in the hot sun.
6. Saiga Antelope
This critically endangered antelope has almost disappeared in Russia and Kazakhstan. Its strange nose is said to help it filter the arid air.

Discovered in 2009, this species of moth will make you say “awww,” or run. There’s no in-between.
