Let’s pause the ongoing argument over the “right” way to do barbecue sauce. Whether you’re on the mustard-based side, the vinegar-based bandwagon, or somewhere in-between, you’ll want to try all of these sauces on your wild game.
I’ve seen some pretty heated arguments over what people believe to be best kind of barbecue sauce (my South Carolina soul certainly has me leaning more towards the mustard-based), but that doesn’t mean I won’t branch out.
When it comes to venison, duck, turkey, and fish, I am always looking for new and interesting sauces that will pump up the flavor volume.
From bourbon to peaches and chipotle to mango, your taste buds won’t know what hit them when you try these BBQ sauces for wild game. Check them out.
There’s nothing quite like a thick and delicious Cumberland sauce to turn up the volume on grilled venison. The red wine, red currants, citrus-y notes, and medley of spices give a nice twist to the traditional BBQ sauces and are sure to awaken your taste buds.
Portuguese -Style Sauce
Used first as a marinade, then boiled into a thickened, tangy-hot sauce, this Portuguese-style BBQ sauce is a great way to enjoy grilled dove breasts.
Mango BBQ Sauce
A BBQ sauce made for fish? Got to love it. Sweet, tangy, and full of flavor, you’ll want to try this mango sauce on salmon filets soon. The sweetness of mango and agave nectar is cut by spicy hot sauce and Dijon mustard, and becomes a winning combination.
Duck BBQ with Horseradish Sauce
These are definitely not your average BBQ sandwiches. Braised duck is shredded in cooking liquid (red wine and Worcestershire included) to make tender, juicy ‘Q, and the grilled sandwich bread is lathered with a creamy horseradish sauce before the duck is piled high. I bet you can’t eat just one.
Cranberry BBQ Sauce
Turkey and cranberry are a classic combination, but you don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to enjoy them. Cranberry BBQ sauce is a great way to shake things up, and adding chili sauce to the mix to gives it some extra kick.
Peach BBQ Sauce
Speaking of great combinations, duck and peach are yet another classic combo. Ripe peaches, fresh ginger, and sweet Vidalia onions make this peach BBQ sauce perfect for crisp roasted duck breasts.
Brew Berry BBQ Sauce
Venison ribs will never be the same once this beer and blueberry BBQ sauce get ahold of them. Get it? “Brew” berry? A little sweet, a little spicy, and a lot of messy, and you’ll definitely go back for seconds.
Bourbon BBQ Sauce
Meatballs don’t typically come to mind when I think of BBQ, but this bourbon-y sauce filled with molasses, tomato, brown sugar, and vinegar just might change my ways. It’s another twist on a classic that you’ll love, particularly with elk meatballs like this.
Chipotle BBQ Sauce
Ahh, a little something for those who like it hot. I mean really hot. Sage hen & chukar kabobs get a kick in the pants with the chipotle, cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, and Teriyaki flavors that make up this chipotle BBQ sauce.
Sweet Garlic BBQ Sauce
I never thought Asian fish sauce would end up in BBQ sauce, but here you have a delicious recipe that does exactly that. I’m all for some grilled snapper, particularly if it’s topped with this garlicky goodness.
